A Flexible and Dynamic Approach to Art Display

The gallery located on second floor of a group retail space with an east facing full height clear glass windows and fully glazed walls towards the passage. The client are avid collectors and connoisseur of art. It’s their first venture in merchandizing and did a good global survey to provide a unique state of the art gallery to the city of Ahmedabad. Our challenge was how to display the art in a unique way and provide maximum facility and flexibility to the curators and artists. Usually, people would light only the art and that too mainly with the track lights of various degree of sophistication based on their budget. We enabled the gallery with different kind of infrastructures to display photos, paintings, sculptures, and exhibit videos. To have a flexibility of shaping the beam of light and have long lasting luminaires track lights have changeable lamps and lenses, indigenously produced wall washers can be used for larger work or art, photos etc and a very cost-effective strip lights in the floor, ceiling and above the movable cabinets can be used to light the space. To curtail excess glare and light motorised curtains were to be used with sheer curtains as well. We added video projection and cabinets of curiosity to add the brilliance in the space. Video projectors can be used to project artist’s and curator’s interviews, creative process in a dynamic way and visible both from the inside and outside the gallery space. The dynamic light with creative art content in the shop window help attract people and give shop its befitting identity. The art can be displayed with movable, adjustable dynamic lights where the colour, intensity and spread of the light can be controlled. The white ceiling and walls of the gallery can be immersed with light whose colours can be changed to complement the colour and mood of the exhibit. The miniature work and the literary collection was lit within custom integrated cabinets. Overall effort has been to provide a very flexible and unusual lighting infrastructure to the artists who would use the galleries to exhibit their art.
